Intelligent Reflecting Surface Aided Full-Duplex Communication: Passive Beamforming and Deployment Design

This paper investigates the passive beamforming and deployment design for an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided full-duplex (FD) wireless system, where FD access point (AP) communicates with uplink (UL) user a downlink (DL) simultaneously over same time-frequency dimension help of IRS. Under this setup, we consider three cases: 1) two distributed IRSs placed near UL DL user, respectively; 2) one centralized IRS user; 3) user. In each case, aim to minimize weighted sum transmit power consumption AP by jointly optimizing their reflection coefficients at (or IRSs), subject users' rate constraints uni-modulus on coefficients. First, analyze minimum required in IRS-aided system under scheme, compare it that corresponding half-duplex (HD) system. We show outperforms its HD counterpart all schemes, while further other schemes. Next, transform challenging minimization problem into equivalent but more tractable form propose efficient algorithm solve based block coordinate descent (BCD) method. Finally, numerical results are presented validate our analysis as well efficacy proposed design.
